Get Misunderstood

My man's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea...

Troublemakers, an electronic band from Marseilles, put together a really great song by combining Jean-Pierre Léaud's monologue from Philippe Garrel's Liberté, La Nuit (1983), the end title track to the 1965 British film The Knack and how to get it directed by Richard Lester (music by John Barry) and a soft melancholic voice of Etta James from the introduction to the piece called St Louis Blues.

Life in Russia in the 90s : D'Est

1993: Chantal Akerman is travelling through Eastern Europe to Russia.

Au bord de la fiction..

Just a series of slow images from across Russia; amazingly long tracking shots of people waiting in never-ending queues; static images of people in their pitiful apartments, clearly staged; empty winter landscapes..

There's no dialogue. We only hear heavy silences and people occasionally make comments or ask questions in Russian while the camera passes by. And we see people's faces. They speak louder than words.

The film is a comment on how lost Russia was at that moment in history after the fall of communism – a lifetime of one ideology was suddenly gone, and nothing new had yet taken its place. People's faces show it all: confusion, embarassement, shame, vulnerability..

Mary Finnigan's Psychedelic Suburbia

I've just listened to an interesting interview with Mary Finnigan, David Bowie's ex land-lady and lover in 1969 in London about her new book and Bowie's biography : Psychedelic Suburbia. Sounds like an interesting read.

Amazing Amy..

I was puzzled by seeing Adele on the cover of the latest Time magazine. I listened to some of her new songs again and still can't share this common craze over her music..

I'd much rather listen to Amy Winehouse.. I love her Back to Black, can replay it over and over again.. Amazing voice, talented girl..

You know I'm no good.

It's too darn hot

I love Paris. And who doesn't?!

Strange Fruit

I've just listened to the radio programme from France Culture on Toni Morrison whose book Beloved shook me to the core a while ago and here's another lady whose voice and talent stirred and deeply moved me. Nina Simone.

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the leaves to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
